Brunch in the New Year (Restaurant Review)

This year I spent New Year's Eve in Silver Spring, MD with friends...not doing anything special...just eating, drinking and laughing. New Year's Day we ventured into DC to Pearl Dive...an Oyster Palace to meet a friend for brunch.

The atmosphere of Pearl Dive is rustic but comfy...with it's heavy wood tables and booths. You enter through a hallway looking entrance where you can either sit at the bar or be seated in the dining area. We were seated in the booths which were a extremely close to the 2 rows of tables beside us, a little too close, as a matter of fact I think the couple that sat next to us were a little uncomfortable with certain parts of our conversation lol...but they could not not hear us!! Enough about the atmosphere...onto the food...

Deliciousness in a Cast Iron Pan
We started off with Grapefruit Mimosas, which could have been sweeter but I forgave their bitter mimosa when they brought the Sticky Cinnamon Roll( $7)...which they must have baked fresh because it did take a while to come out. But it was crisp on the outside and warm and gooey on the inside. The cream cheese frosting with real BACON bit sprinkles balanced each other out to the perfect explosion of warm, soft, crunch, sweet, salty goodness in one bite! So Good!!

As an entree I ordered the Sweet Potato Hash with the cheddar scallion biscuit ($13) , the biscuit was good albeit bland...I could visibly see the scallions but I think the biscuits needed salt to exaggerate the flavors. The hash left much to be desired...I actually had to send it back because the poached eggs on top of the hash were so overcooked they could have been mistaken for hard boiled eggs, the yolks didn't run at all when I broke the egg open. They solved the issue but making me new eggs but it still didn't rock my boat...I just realized the actual name of the dish I ordered was Sweet Potato Andouille Hash...but I don't remember a crumb of Andouille sausage in the hash...all the ingredients were diced so small you couldn't tell what they were...and I know for a fact andouille sausage is very flavorful in and of itself so there must not have been that much sausage in the hash to begin with poo poo on Pearl Dive for that and they call themselves being inspired by New Orleans...humph!  If the chef ever read this and wants my two cents I say make it a heartier hash, with chunkier cuts of potatoes, peppers and sausage. In New Orleans everything is big! Flavor and portion size...so I kinda felt ripped off...

Another friend ordered the Steak and Eggs ($15), she said it was good but for the price I don't know if it was worth it. Apparently there was a special Dive Burger and Beer for $10 that the waitress didn't tell us about but a local friend, who was running a little late, ordered the special confidently. When the burger arrived it looked delicious and I was sad that I didn't know that was an option...

The service was ehhhh...ok. Like I said my eggs were over cooked. The friend who ordered the burger asked for them to add an egg to it, which they did not AND didn't offer to fix it once she brought it to the waitresses attention. The beer took forever to come and from what I heard it was just ok...the manager of chef came to greet every table except for ours, which I thought was strange...even bad criticism is good criticism...and! A couple tables over...a waiter spilled a Bloody Mary on a guest while we were there...so Idk what to say about the service.

I'm going to have to come up with a scale system for rating these things if I continue to do them all in all...if you're around Pearl Dive...go there for the Cinnamon Roll...and maybe the oysters??

Who's that GirL?! with the Farrah Fawcett CurLs!

I was bored and New Year's Eve was around the corner so I decided to play in my hair and make a photo tutorial of how I straighten my hair...EnjoY!

What I use:
Luster Shampoo (unpictured)
Luster Defrizz Define & Shine Serum
Oyin Handmade Hair Dew
Oyin Handmade Juices & Berries
Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Blow Dry Perfector Straightening Balm
Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Flat Iron Perfector Straightening Mist
Butterfly Clips
Rat tail Comb
Brush
Blowdrier
Flat iron

What I did:

1. Washed and deep conditioned my hair. I rinsed out the deep conditioner which left my hair as such...

Freshly washed and conditioned hair
2. Sectioned off hair and added Hair Dew and Blow Dry Balm to each section then blowdried my hair using a vented brush (unpictured)

3. I re-sectioned my hair (unpictured) and took about 3/4inch of hair and sprayed with the flat iron mist. My flat iron was on high heat. Immediately after spraying the mist, I quickly flat iron my roots then place rat tail comb at the roots and proceed to flat iron the rest of my hair while combing the hair at the same time. I hope this makes sense. After doing this to my entire head my hair looked like this...
4. But I hate super straight hair...so I immediately installed flexirods. I again sectioned off my hair and coated each section with Juices and Berries and brushed with the bristle brush until smooth and put the flexirods in like so...

5. Oh! I forgot...after I put in the flexirods I sprayed my hair with some Dove firm holding spray then I went about my day doing other things around the house and after a few hours I took out the flexirods and my hair looked like this....

6. Then I finger combed the curls out to get this...

Which I loved!! But then I realized that I was a day early and I had done my hair for nothing because it was the Eve of New Year's Eve...not New Year's Eve...sooo I continued to play

Farrah Fawcett Curls...

With the Beanie...

And I've been obsessed with short hair lately so I pinned up the back and took a couple pics with a short layered look....I LOVED IT!!

ChiLi...Indian Style??

I should probably come up with something more creative when it comes to what inspires these dishes but honestly 85% of the time it's a combination of me being lazy and resourceful. I have a tendency to buy things I don't have an immediate need for because it's a good deal...or I think eventually I can use this...or I want to be able to use it (i.e.-it's healthy for me and I know I should be eating this instead of take out haha)...but then it sits around until I'm like..ok...if you don't use it it's going to be a waste of your money and I don't want to waste money soooooo....enter my recipe for Indian Turkey Chili.

Ingredients
-1/2lb of ground turkey
-1/2 medium size butternut squash (peeled and cubed)
-appx. 1 cup green lentils
-1 large onion
- an inch size thumb of ginger
-garlic
-cinnamon stick
-salt (I use Himalayan Pink Salt)
-cumin
-garam masala
-cayenne pepper
-red chili flakes
-chicken stock
-spinach
-feta cheese

To Do
-In my pot over medium heat I added about a tbsp of ghee. Let that heat thoroughly then add garlic, onion, ginger and cinnamon stick.
-After a few minutes of the onions cooking...maybe when you start to smell the ginger add the turkey and all the dry seasonings (you want the seasonings to heat and release their oils into the turkey)

-Next, I added the lentils and let those "fry" in the liquids in the pot (turkey doesn't have much fat so there won't be much grease in the pan...but whatever you have in there I want that to help kinda toast the lentils)

-Add the cubed butternut squash and the chicken stock

-Cook until the lentils are soft..at this point the butternut squash should be cooked thoroughly

-Taste the stock and alter your seasons to your taste...I added some extra cayenne and salt to get the flavor I liked

-I'm not sure if the order of this matters but it's what I did....I filled my bowl with the hearty stuff first...letting the liquid drain off into the pot...then I added a handful of raw spinach..then topped until I had as much stock as I wanted in the soup this helped to wilt the spinach while keeping my presentation nice...I then topped it off with some feta cheese and Voila!

ChristMaS ParTy deeTs!

First and foremost HAPPY 2015!!!!! I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday season (whatever that means for you) I had every intention of catching up on my blogging during the Christmas/ New Year break but that didn't happen at all...FEAR NOT!! I did think of you all and kept notes and pictures of all the things I wanted to share so slowly but surely I will get it all up...

So I'll start with my Christmas party...somehow it has become customary for me to have a Christmas party every year. I don't mind it...actually I enjoy it because it forces me to put Christmas up in my apartment and to get into the Christmas Spirit. This year I only added a few things to my Christmas tree (a few boxes of teal and lime green bulbs and fake glittery peacock feathers from Hobby Lobby, some feathers with bells on them from Michael's) but I think it made a big difference...

I still think it was missing something but it was beautiful and I hated that I had to take it down on Sunday...but all good things come to an end. I thought about donating my fake tree to the Goodwill because I want to have a real tree for next Christmas...when I'm in my new house (speaking things into existence) but my mom decorates more than one tree in her house so I think I'll keep this one. Plus next Xmas...I'm doing a Xmas tree dress...like this one...except with my own flair to it of course!

Back to the Christmas Party...there was lots of food and drinks, plenty of conversation, Catch Phrase and White Elephant gift exchanges. Unfortunately, I was so preoccupied mingling and having so much fun  I forgot to take pics,..as did my guests (which was a personal score for me because it showed me that in 2014 it is possible for people to sucessfully interact with other human beings face to face and not through technology), it was beautiful though. I planned this party in a fashion that would allow me to enjoy myself...I was rarely in the kitchen unless I was refilling trays with food or talking.

To Eat...
-Pulled Pork Sliders
-Potstickers (chicken and pork) with a homemade dipping sauce
-Mini Quiches
-Seasoned Pretzels
-Philly Soft Pretzels (courtesy of one of my best friends who drove from Philly to see me)
-Parmesan Artichoke Dip
-Caramel Apples
-Assorted Cookies (Gingerbread Men and Madeleine's)
-Sesame Poppy Seed Cake
-Chia Seed Pudding with fresh cranberry compote

To Drink...
-Signature Cocktail **Made ahead of time and kept refilling the pitcher when it got low)
   -1 bottle of Verdi
   -32 oz Apple Juice
   -1 bottle of Ginger beer
-8 oz of Twenty Grand (Vodka infused Cognac)
-Mixed and garnished with Cranberries and Fresh Mint
-Sorrel (A tea made from Hibiscus leaves)
-Wines, vodkas, whiskeys and such

This party truly warmed my heart, I felt like everyone had a great time and it was nice to see a bunch of important people in my life in one space having a blast together and intermingle.NERD ALERT: When I was younger I spent an abundant amount of time playing The Sims, if you could threw a good party your Sim was on Cloud 9 for days...this party still makes me smile...so I'd say it was a success We stayed up until 2am eating, drinking and playing Catch Phrase (my favorite game- it's a mix between hot potato and charades) We also exchanged gifts White Elephant Style and I got this awesomely tacky but kinda cute sweater that I'll show you in a future post...
